Bed Bugs

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that mainly feed on human blood, although they may also feed on pets or other warm-blooded animals. Even though we tend to think of them as a pest problem in the past, these tiny pests can still be found in Tampa, Jacksonville, Gainesville and other places throughout Florida. Their resurgence comes from an increase in international travel as well as mass transit. While they require a blood meal in order to reproduce, they have been known to go a long time without food if necessary—sometimes up to a year. Once fed, the female bed bug will lay up to 200 at one time.

Why do I have bed bugs?

Bed bugs excel at hitchhiking. Instead of holding up a thumb and hoping for a ride, however, they make their way to your home through your luggage, clothing, or even suitcase. They hide in nooks and crannies in mattresses, chairs, sofas, and even behind wallpaper or pictures. They can really be introduced into your home at any time.

Are bed bugs dangerous?

Bed bugs aren’t known as carriers or transmitters of disease, but bed bug bites usually cause redness and swelling. If you’ve been bitten by bed bugs, an antihistamine or a corticosteroid can help relieve the itching. One thing to note, however: nearly 50% of bed bug victims don’t show any evidence of bites, so you may not even know a problem exists.

How do I get rid of bed bugs?

Bed bugs hide in mattresses, yes, but they can also be found in chairs, sofas, and even behind wallpaper or pictures. They can be found underneath flooring and electrical outlets, too. If there’s a tight space a bed bug can make its way into—even between the pages of books—a bed bug will find a way.

The only way to eliminate the problem is to be extremely thorough. Every corner and crevice of your home needs to be searched, which means just throwing out an infested mattress won’t solve the problem. To make matters worse, new bed bugs are even more resistant to chemicals and insecticides that were traditionally used to treat them.
