When Is Cockroach Season in Florida?

Due to Florida’s warm, humid climate, cockroach season is year-round. Cockroaches may slow down their activity in colder weather, depending on which type of cockroach you have, but it never completely goes away.

German cockroaches that are already inside your home will decrease their activity in the colder weather and, instead, will overwinter and focus on reproduction instead. American cockroaches will come indoors late in the summer months because of increased rain or extreme heat. Strong hurricanes and super rain events, which are common in the summer months in Florida, will also drive roaches indoors.

Regardless of what season of the year we are in, keeping roaches out of your home is important. Roaches carry diseases and contaminate any surfaces they crawl across. They also trigger allergies and asthma. Prevent cockroaches with these three DIY tips.

  1. Declutter Your Home: To reduce the possibility of roaches hiding in your home, remove items that they will use for shelter, such as cardboard or old newspapers. Plastic storage containers should be used instead of cardboard boxes for storage. Recycle and dispose of all old newspapers and cardboard boxes.
  2. Seal Entrances: If you see daylight coming in through the outside of a door or window, cockroaches are likely to enter. Because roaches can fit into the smallest crack or crevice, it is critical to seal all openings. Check for cracks in your foundation, roof, attic, or crawlspace vents. Seal any smaller gaps or holes with caulk. Use steel wool or foam to fill larger holes or openings. Use fine wire mesh for chimneys or attics.
  3. Remove Moisture: Roaches require water to survive and will constantly search for it. Look for leaking faucets, sinks, pipes, and even refrigerators and appliances in your home. If there is a leak, make sure it is repaired as soon as possible. Similarly, use a dehumidifier to dry out areas of your basement. If you have a crawlspace, consider enclosing it to keep moisture out and temperatures stable.

Keeping your home free of roaches can be a daunting task. If you have a problem with roaches or other pests, contact your local pest control company for a comprehensive evaluation.
