There are some good and valid reasons why you don’t want earwigs in your home, but they do not include things like the fact that you don’t want them crawling into your ears while you are sleeping. You see, these little pests get their name from an old wives’ tale. This wives’ tale says that these interesting looking creatures have a taste for ear wax and brain consumption. The long and short of this tale is that they will crawl into our ears when we are asleep and happily consume our earwax. They will then continue burrowing their way through our brain where they will lay their eggs and ultimately end up in our other ear where they will rid us of that ear wax before leaving us! EWWW! While that seems a bit disgusting and unrealistic, believe it or not, many people have believed it. This tale of their behavior is absolutely false. Now, let’s get on to the real reasons that you don’t want them in your home.
Earwigs can be damaging to plants. They can consume tender plant offshoots and inhibit or prohibit growth. Most of the time they come in with potted plants, and as long as those plants stay moist, they will happily stay there. In nature, earwigs are usually helping to decompose plant material and vegetation on the ground. Once inside, they congregate in moist, dark areas.
Earwigs are a sign that there’s a lot of moisture in your home. They can be a ‘red flag’ of sorts to alert you that the area they are in is moist enough for them to desire to reside there. If you are finding lots of them in your basement or attic, or any other room in your home, it’s most likely time for a dehumidifier or to check for possible moisture issues within your walls, ceilings, or floors.
