Difficult to Eradicate
Hazard to Health
Adult big headed ants range in color from yellow to a dark reddish brown; depending on the specific species. Big headed ant colonies contain two different types of workers; major workers and minor workers. The major workers are the source of their name from- they have a very large head compared to the size of the rest of their body. Major ants are soldiers and defend the colony and use their very large jaws to help cracks seeds for the colony to feed on. The minor workers are much smaller than the major workers and are responsible for feeding the colony, building the nest, and taking care of the immature ants.
Big headed ants often get into homes as the workers are out foraging for food and water sources. Indoors they prefer to feed on foods that are high in proteins. The workers create trails from the nest to the food that they find for them and the other workers from the colony to follow. Inside your home you typically see the foraging ants in kitchen and bathroom areas.
Big headed ants generally nest outdoors and only come inside to forage for food. They are not known for causing structural damage to properties. They do not bite or sting, however a few species are known for being carriers of tapeworm and because of this issue a big headed ant infestation should be eliminated from your home as quickly as possible.
Big headed ants can be an extremely difficult pest problem to solve due to their foraging nature and colony development. Only a small percentage of ants within a colony are actively foraging for food, it is essential to inspect and pinpoint where ants are coming from. Because colonies are often located far away from the infested structure and not even located on the property, it is important to seek help from a professional in order to successfully eradicate the ant population. Treatment is best when it is performed near the nest - instead of being widely applied.
