How to Choose a Pest Control Professional

When you have a pest problem, you want to know that you are going to get the professional service that you need. You expect the best, and you need it taken care of as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Best Practices for Choosing Pest Control

  • Find out if they have experience with your type of pest problem. Sometimes, pest control companies specialize in certain pests, and you will want one with expertise dealing with your specific pest.
  • Get references. There really is no substitute for this, so go with one that comes with referrals from your friends or relatives who have recently used their services.
  • Find out if they are trained and licensed. Reputable pest control companies often have regional or national accreditations and professional organization memberships.
  • Look to see if there are any service guarantees. For termite contracts, you also want to know if there is liability insurance just in case the treatment fails (e.g. determine if any damaged wood will be replaced). In addition, get a timeline for reinspections. Finally, learn where treatment stations will be placed and which types of chemicals will be used.
  • Check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints against the company. Your state will also have a similar list.
  • Get at least two or three estimates before you buy. Compare the range of services offered and pricing prior to making a decision.
  • Understand how often treatments are repeated, how many treatments are covered, and for how long the service is good. There will be a contract, which should detail all the terms of servicing your home or business.
  • Learn what chemicals they use and how they are distributed in your home or business. In most cases, limited amounts of chemicals and distribution is ideal. Note that warmer climates may require a wider usage.
  • Find out what the company will do in the way of prevention, how long it will take, and how often they need to return for inspections, cleanup, etc.
  • Depending on the particular pest, your service professional should always perform the services as covered in the Agreement. Do not expect anything to be done for you if it is not in print. Before signing anything, be sure that you understand everything contained in the service agreement and ask questions if you don’t.
