You’re standing in the kitchen cooking dinner, when all the sudden you spot an ant crawling across the cupboard. Before you know it, it’s not just one ant, but an army of them marching over the surfaces in your home and potentially contaminating the food you eat and feed to your family. When the spring and summer months arrive, so do ants. They make their way into your home looking for better nesting conditions and for something to eat. Once you have ants in the kitchen they tend to stick around. Your home becomes like a five-star restaurant to the tiny insect, and as long as there are food and water sources, they’ll keep coming back!

There are several different types of ants in Savannah that could potentially be looking to make your home their own. Argentine ants are small and black. They move into homes to get out of the elements and to look for food. One of their favorite things to eat is sweets. Popular spring and summer snacks such as watermelon or other fruits are a big draw for them. Argentine ants will sting or bite if they feel threatened but they are not known to pose a great danger to people in that sense. The greater risk comes from their potential to contaminate food.

Carpenter ants can bite people but rarely do. These ants are known more for the danger they pose to your home. Carpenter ants make their way into your home looking for food. In building their nests, they chew through wood to create tunnels. They can cause a pretty significant amount of damage to your home, deck, shed or really any wooden structure.

Another type of ants common in Savannah is crazy ants. Crazy ants do not bite or sting but they are known for being extremely invasive. Not only do they force out other ant colonies, they can also pose a danger to livestock. They are able to attack larger animals and sometimes even kill them. These ants are also drawn to electrical wires so they can do a lot of damage to air conditioning units, heating systems and other electronics. If it seems as though no matter how many ants you kill they keep coming back, it’s getting rid of ants in the house is not as easy as squishing a few here and there. You have to make sure you have destroyed the entire colony. That’s why it is so important when you start seeing ants in your home to call Savannah pest control professionals.
