Having a stormy winter can keep us inside for months. It can also send some unwanted house pests knocking at our doors to get in. Home pests tend to want you to let them in your home more often after a stormy winter. They realize that you have a much safer shelter then anything they can build on their own. They use to have to rough it outside all winter in a game of survival of the fittest. Now that places are becoming more populated, pests are becoming more prevalent. During the winter months, it is estimated that nearly 21 million US homes experience a rodent infestation. Your shelter is just so sophisticated to them. It is warm and has plenty of food and water.

Having a stormy winter can cause some damaging effects to your home that may offer the perfect entry way for pests. It is good to examine the exterior of your home after the winter months to make sure there is no pest inviting damage. Here are a few things to check for:

  • Wind Damage: Wind damage can be destructive to siding, roofing, windows and doors. It is best take a moment and check them to see if they have been damaged. If they have, it can be an entry way for rodents, termites or other pests to get into your home.

  • Ice Build Up: Having ice buildup over the winter months can be very damaging to your home. It can create a leaky ceiling that could bring water damage into your home. Pests are attracted to moisture in your home as an easy water source they can access out of your sight. If you have wood that is damaged by moisture, this could attract termites and carpenter ants to your home.

  • Freezing Cold: Having freezing temperature can lead to damage to your home, including freezing water pipes. This will allow for an easy source of water for pests to get into.

If you find that you feel you are in need of pest removal services, it is best to call a professional. They will be able to help you assess your home's current pest situation and help you setup a year round pest prevention program. A year round pest prevention program will keep your home pest free all year and give you access to a highly trained pest removal team for any emergencies.
