More Rain Equals More Pest Problems

In: Pest Prevention Tips

Older | Newer

The more it rains the more pests you will see in and around your home. Gainesville, FL has been having higher rainfall amount than normal this summer. This is causing a large number of pest related problems for this area. Mosquitoes are a common problematic outdoor pest that is heightened by more rainfall. Ants are also a common indoor pest that is increased by more rainfall. With an increase in pest activity you will also get an increase in disease outbreaks in the area.

Mosquitoes are attracted to wet areas for breeding and food sources. When there is an overabundance of rainfall in an area mosquitoes will be drawn to it. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in any form of stagnant water. This can be a pond, marsh, bird bath, kiddie pool, gutter or old tire. After days of rainfall, the water begins to add up in areas that commonly do not hold water. Your backyard may begin to have a small pond forming in the low areas. This water build up will attract mosquitoes to your home. With this larger than normal amount of rain in Gainesville, you will want to keep a few things in mind to reduce the mosquito population in your backyard:

  • Change out any stagnant water you find in things like bird baths and kiddie pools.

  • Make sure your gutter and downspouts are clear of any debris to keep water flowing away from your home.

  • Look for any unusual water build up in things like trash cans and old tires. Make sure that you empty them of this water and store them out of the rain.

  • Make sure to have proper drainage for your lawn and garden to ensure that water does not build up and become stagnant.

Once the sun is back out those little mosquito eggs will probably be ready to hatch creating a surge in mosquito activity. Though it is impossible to be completely mosquito free, these are steps you can take to lower the mosquito population in your backyard.

Ants are a common indoor pest problem during a heavy rain season. They are venturing into your home to keep the rain from washing them away. Ants will send out foragers to find food and shelter. If they find easy access into your home, they will stay for an easy meal. Once you find one or two ants in your kitchen you can be sure that there will be more to come. A popular ant in Gainesville is the carpenter ant. These ants are not only annoying but they can also cause damage to wood within your home. Make sure that any cracks, holes and vents are sealed tightly on the exterior of your home to try and prevent these ants from entering it.

With any increase in pest activity it will increase the amount of disease that is spread by these pests. Gainesville area has had an increase in Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV). This disease is commonly transmitted by mosquitoes. With the increase in mosquito activity the residents of Gainesville are also seeing an increase in this disease. The symptoms of EEEV can include headache, fever, chills and vomiting. In severe cases it may cause disorientation, seizures and coma.

If you have a home in or near Gainesville, we suggest to keep these pest prevention tips in mind and contact a quality pest control company, like McCall, if an infestation occurs!
