Have you got plans for holiday traveling this year? If you do, we suggest you do some preparation and we don’t just mean packing your suitcases! Bed bug preparation before holiday traveling can go a long way in the fight against these nighttime blood-suckers, helping you protect your home and family from an infestation of these pests. Here are some helpful tips from the Jacksonville pest control professionals at McCall Service to help you avoid picking up bed bugs this holiday season.

Before travelling, make sure you know what bed bugs look like. These pests are approximately 1/8 of an inch when full grown and they are dark brown, oval and flat. They have been described as looking like an apple seed and although they are tiny, they are not impossible to see with the naked eye. Check out our bed bug identification page for more details on exactly what bed bugs look like.

Take a flashlight and a magnifying glass with you to wherever you plan to stay. Before you bring your belongings into your room, use these items to help you find signs of bed bugs. These can include shed bed bug skins, bed bug eggs, bed bug fecal spots on bedding, mattresses, box springs or furniture. In heavy infestations, the scent of coriander or overly-ripe raspberries can be detected.

When packing, enclose your belongings in re-sealable plastic bags and use hard-sided luggage. Both of these can help keep bed bugs from infiltrating your belongings.

When traveling in public transportation (planes, trains, automobiles, etc), keep your belongings on your lap whenever possible. Keep in mind that you can pick up bed bugs in these places too, so stay vigilant.

Before you return home, examine your luggage and belongings (and even the clothes on your body!) closely for signs of bed bugs. If you think you have bed bugs and you’re not home yet, contact the pros at McCall for a bed bug inspection before you bring your luggage into your home. If you are already home and think you (or a visitor) have introduced bed bugs, contact us for an immediate bed bug heat treatment to get rid of these pests before the infestation gets out of hand.
