McCall Service not only treats pests, but they also have helped to protect a historical site here in Jacksonville. The Old Mandarin Schoolhouse, built in 1889 as part of the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Mandarin, Florida, is an important historical site that was used to harbor children of freed black slaves after the Civil War. After being moved several times, this schoolhouse has finally found its permanent home in the Walter Jones Historical Park where it will become a museum once its repairs are completed.

The schoolhouse, it seems, had been invaded by termites; and not just one species but two! Subterranean termites and drywood termites have both been feasting on the bottom support beams and one side of the building causing extensive damage. You would have to be an expert, like McCall Service, to know the differences between these species of termites and how to treat them. Here are a few basics:

Subterranean Termites:

  • Live in the soil in huge colonies
  • Form tunnels to enter buildings to ‘eat’ wood
  • Prefer moist , water damaged wood
  • Swarm from January to May
  • Infestation usually not seen until damage is severe
  • Cannot eradicate on your own

Drywood Termites:

  • Live inside un-decayed wood with low moisture content
  • Do not require contact with soil to live
  • Prefer dry sound wood
  • Swarm from April to July
  • Can only be seen if you break open the wood they are hidden inside
  • Infestation usually not seen until damage is severe
  • Cannot eradicate on your own

Where does McCall Service come in? Well, they are a local family owned company that cares about this community and its history; after all, the owners were born and raised here. Having served this community with state of the art solutions for its pest control needs since 1928, they are experts at identifying and treating termites! So, they were able to identify and treat the termites in the schoolhouse! Once those repairs were completed, McCall Service donated their labor and installed a Sentricon® Termite Colony Elimination System provided by Dow AgroSciences. Thanks to McCall and Dow, there is now a barrier of protection around this historic site to ensure that termites will not be able to devour it again.
