Fire Ants In Tallahassee

There is only one thing worse than fire ants. Oh, wait. No, there isn't. Fire ants are the worst. They suck the happiness out of a beautiful, sunny Florida day. They tell you where you can stand and where you can't stand. They ruin anything that involves lying on a blanket, and make you move to another picnic bench. It's tyranny! Who's in control here, anyway? Are we going to let a creature between ⅛ and ⅜ of an inch long rule our lives like an evil dictator? It is time to stop the madness!

Since the 1930s, the red imported fire ant has slowly crept its way across the southern states, raining down misery in every area it has put its tiny little red feet--including Florida. It prefers to be in areas of landscaping, but can also be found inside human-made structures, getting in through cracks, HVAC systems and AC units. Once inside a home, it will seek out its preferred food sources of sugar and protein. Rotting fruit, rotting meat and a bowl of pet food are prime attractors for this fiery biter.

Exclusion

There are ways you can make your home less accessible and less attractive to this annoying little pest.

  • Seal rotted areas on your exterior walls.

  • Use a caulking gun to fill in cracks around AC units, plumbing fixtures, outlets, and windows.

  • Use a sealing agent on basement walls.

  • Keep all inside and outside trash in sealed containers.

  • Put pet food down only during meal time. And spray some window cleaner on the floor, or the dish, to keep scout ants from leaving a scent trail to the food.

  • Put dishes in soapy water, instead of in a dry stack next to the sink.

  • Don't leave fruit out on the table or counter.

Prevention

If you see a trail of fire ants or a ton of them mobbing an area, spray them with soapy water. This will kill some of them. But most importantly, it will clean away their trail pheromones, which they use to smell their way to a food source.

If these tips aren't enough and you're ready to rid the world--or at least your property--of these demon creatures, give McCall Service a call. You can start getting some ant relief for as low as $29.99 a month, and also protect your home from roaches, spiders, scorpions, wasps, silverfish, ticks, earwigs, millipedes, centipedes, flies, springtails, house crickets and pill bugs, while you're at it.

Make this the year you improve your quality of living and say goodbye to fire ants.
